About Us

M&F Co-op Funeral Department was launched in January 1926 and was originally part of M&F Co-op Society.

The care and consideration provided by the new funeral services, together with the commitment and dedication quickly earned M&F Funeral Department an enviable reputation.  We rapidly grew out of our old Bushmill premises (adjacent to Fisherrow Harbour) and built brand new premises at Lochend Road in 1929, we still operate from this building today.

Over the years, we have taken an enormous amount of pride in putting family needs first.  Some of the old traditions remain with us today such as paging the cortege, coffins are fully fitted and tailored by hand, arrangements are made by sitting with the client and taking hand written notes.  The attention devoted to caring and advising our clients which earned us our steadfast reputation also remains and we believe that looking after our clients in their time of need is a privilege and we are honoured that they not only trust us to care for their loved ones but return to us in their time of need for our support and assistance.

Our Funeral Homes are tastefully designed to create a warm and comfortable environment.  We are conscious of the climatic and environmental changes and ensure that all of our coffins are produced from sustainable forests.  We also offer a choice of cardboard, wicker or wool coffins, all suitable for cremation or burial and are particularly favoured for natural burials.

We are very much part of the local community with branches in Musselburgh – Lochend Road South and High Street and Dalkeith.  We support local charities, gala days and sponsor local sporting events.  We believe in investing in the local community and being part of it.

Today, M&F Funeral Services is an independent funeral director employing a small team of experienced, professional and caring individuals.  Our purpose remains the same; to facilitate meaningful ways for our clients to grieve their loss and celebrate the memories of their loved ones.  We provide respectful funeral, memorial and Monumental services whilst always looking after the deceased with the utmost dignity and respect.  We believe we provide the highest quality service at the best price whilst always striving to exceed the expectations of each client we serve.  We do this by providing information, options, and guidance with the highest level of quality of service to all of our clients.

In 2019 we applied for Trusted Trader Status through East Lothian Council, we were put through vigorous checks by Trading Standards and Police Scotland and to this day remain the only Funeral Director in East Lothian to be listed as a Trusted Trader in the funeral sector.
